Yale Class of 1967
45th Reunion – May 31-June 3, 2012
Dear Classmates and Friends,
THROUGH MEM'RY'S HAZE
Our 45th reunion is rapidly approaching and we hope that the DVD we are mailing to you – containing all the issues of the Yale Daily News for the entire four years that we were there, including the Brewster inauguration, tenure disputes, as well as the great freshman year Bladderball riot – will put you in the proper mood.
There's even more: a football highlights film of our senior year football team, narrated by Carm Cozza. Just place the DVD into your computer or DVD player, sit back, and enjoy the memories.
Then make your plans to join us in New Haven for the reunion at Timothy Dwight College from May 31 to June 3.
COME THURSDAY
This year, we're pulling out the stops to encourage you to attend all four days by front-loading the reunion with some fascinating programs on Thursday afternoon, starting with an inside look at the latest plans for the two new residential colleges, introduced by Ed Bass and presented by University Planner Laura Cruikshank.
Then we're off to the Kenney Center at the Yale Bowl for a cocktail party from this superb vantage point above the newly-renovated Bowl, hosted by our own Robert Kenney. Be sure to visit Jensen Plaza, a gift of classmate Mark Jensen and his family, where our football classmates’ names are etched in granite. Our ’67 Whiffs will lead us in classic Yale football fight songs, climaxing with a personal appearance by none other than Coach Cozza himself.
FUN-FILLED FRIDAY
Better get a good night's sleep Thursday night because Friday will be packed with can't-miss events, starting with our classmate Karl Marlantes, author of the acclaimed novel Matterhorn, about his experience as a Marine in Vietnam, and his latest book, the non-fiction What It Is Like To Go To War. Whether you were in the rice paddies of Vietnam fighting the war or in the streets of America protesting it, we were all touched deeply by this life-changing event.
Next, we're going to ask everyone to turn off their recording devices and video cameras for off-the-record reports of what really went on behind the scenes during some of the most
important events of our time, as told by our classmates who participated in them: George Pataki, Governor of New York on 9/11; Victor Ashe, American Ambassador to Poland on the day Pope John Paul II died; Federal Judge John Lungstrum, on what it's like to prepare for a Senate confirmation; and our moderator, Lanny Davis, presidential advisor during the impeachment crisis.
The final event on Friday afternoon will be a moving non-denominational memorial service for our departed classmates at the United Church on the Green, led by Tom Troeger with assistance from several other classmates.
Then it's back to TD for a relaxing cocktail hour and dinner. Bob Allison and Paul Lamar, both accomplished players, will take to the piano in the Common Room before dinner on Friday and Saturday, playing Gershwin, Porter, and other classics. Singing along is encouraged. During dessert our Whiffs will treat us to their specially prepared reunion concert with memorable Yale songs. The relax with your friends under the tent.
SUPER SATURDAY
On Saturday afternoon Rick Moody, editor of the Human Values in Aging Newsletter, will moderate a panel on "Second Acts," featuring classmates who have reinvented themselves: Bob Jones, a lawyer turned portrait painter; Dave Richards, a lawyer who successfully fought age discrimination at his own firm and became a Kipling scholar and collector; and Jan Krupp, a doctor turned award-winning winemaker.
The musical theme will continue Saturday, when our classmate John Mauceri,
Founding Director of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and Chancellor of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, will present “The Hollywood Sound: What It Is and How It Works,” an overview of movie music from the silent years to The Artist, using historical footage augmented by both commercial recordings and John's private collection.
Incidentally, Jan is donating some of his Krupp Brothers and Black Bart wines, among the most prestigious wines in Napa Valley, to our Class Dinner. (Thanks, Jan!) And, at the request of beer aficionados, we're eschewing the usual Miller/Bud brews and offering artisanal beers from local microbreweries, instead.
The highlight of the day – and the reunion – will be the Class Dinner on Saturday night, featuring a minimum of speechmaking and a maximum of nostalgia, climaxing with the Whiffs leading us in “Bright College Years.” After dinner, a rock-and-soul dance band will belt out hits by the Temptations, Marvin Gaye and others from our day.
Several other programs on Saturday are still in the works, but we'll let you know about them as soon as we finalize the details.
Meanwhile, Yale will be offering its own reunion activities throughout the weekend, including lectures from the cream of the faculty, an all-class Whiffenpoof/Whim 'n Rhythm/Glee Club songfest, and President Rick Levin's annual “State of the University” address.
REGISTER:
Our goal is for everyone to come and afterwards conclude that the weekend just went too fast; and there were so many fun activities, it was impossible to take them all in.
Our opportunities to visit as a whole class are too infrequent. Miss this one, and ten years will separate you from your last visit and all those classmates you’d like to see – and those who will miss you. Golf with your friends, follow Marty Snapp on a pizza run to Wooster Square, or just relax and enjoy a quiet conversation in the shade of the trees in the Timothy Dwight courtyard. To book tee times Friday or Saturday morning, beginning at 8:30, contact Rick Luis at Richard.Luis@state.mn.us or Howard Dale at HDale@dalebalad.com.
So register now.
The Reunion Registration fee is $395 per person for the entire reunion, plus $118 per person for housing for the three reunion nights, if you stay at Timothy Dwight. Off-campus housing is also available, but those hotel rooms are being snapped up fast, so act soon.
Financial assistance is available for classmates who find the cost of registration and college lodging out of reach. You can speak in strictest confidence with Jennifer Julier, our class's AYA liaison, at 203-436-8014. Surviving partners have been invited as guests of the class.
The bottom line is this: we really, really want you there with us. It won't be the same without you.
See you in New Haven!
