Each spring, six individuals are elected to the AYA Board of Governors to serve a three-year term. According to the AYA Constitution, the individuals who are named to the slate to stand for election must come out of the AYA Assembly delegate body. Delegates (appointed and ex officio) and current AYA Board are the eligible voters in this election. To learn more about the nomination process, please read the memo below from AYA Board Chair, Michael Madison.
DEADLINE EXTENDED TO MARCH 5

RE: AYA Board of Governors – Call for nominations
I am writing today regarding the Spring 2012 AYA Board of Governors election. Later this Spring, you and other AYA Assembly delegates will vote to elect six from the delegate body to serve three-year terms on the AYA Board. All current delegates – both those appointed to represent their constituency and those who serve as ex officio delegates (e.g., class secretaries, club presidents, G&P association presidents) – are eligible to be nominated. Ordinarily, however, experienced delegates/volunteers are given primary consideration by the Board of Governors Nominating Committee.
We invite you – and all your fellow delegates – to submit recommendations of delegates whom you believe to be qualified candidates. If you are an experienced delegate/volunteer, self-nominations are particularly helpful and are strongly encouraged. Please note that for sustainability reasons, this call for nominations and a link to the nomination form posted on the AYA Web site is being sent electronically to all delegates for whom Yale has an e-mail address on file. A paper version of the call and the nomination form will be sent via postal mail only to those delegates for whom Yale does not have an e-mail address on record. To access a copy of the nomination form, please click here. Completed nomination forms should be returned to Jenny Chavira, AYA Deputy Executive Director, by February 28, via e-mail or by faxing to the number noted at the bottom of the nomination form. If you received this communication electronically but would like a paper copy, please contact Jessica Rostow at the AYA at 203-432-1949.
The nominations will be reviewed by the BOG Nominating Committee, which is made up of sitting delegates, and a slate to stand for election will be developed from that pool. Once again, to be eligible for consideration, nominees must be current AYA delegates (appointed or ex officio). If you are a current delegate but are not interested in nominating yourself this year, but might be interested in serving on the Nominating Committee, please let Jenny know.
Regarding the role of the Board and the meaning of Board service: Board members are responsible for leading the work of the AYA through involvement in and leadership of a number of committees and other Yale volunteer organizations. The scope of the AYA’s activities today is guided by the AYA’s Strategic Plan, titled “Ambassadors for Yale,” and will soon be further directed by a new strategic plan, currently under development. The first plan can be found online at http://www.aya.yale.edu/content/strategic-plan.
As you consider whether you will nominate yourself or another delegate, some background on the Board of Governors meeting schedule might be helpful. Board members are expected to attend most, if not all, Board and committee meetings during their three-year term. The Board typically meets in New Haven three or four times a year, once or twice in the Fall – often in September and then in conjunction with the Assembly in November, once in February, and again in the Spring – usually in late April. The Board sometimes meets for a Summer retreat. The work of the Board continues between meetings, by telephone and e-mail, and Board committees and other Board subgroups schedule additional in person or telephone meetings from time to time.
If you have questions about Board service, the nomination process, or the election, please feel free to contact me or Jenny. For all that you do for Yale, many thanks.
