Leadingham, ‘The Greenup Slave Revolt: Slavery, Environment, and Resistance at the Edges of the Southern Mountains’ This work uses a slave revolt that happened in northeastern Kentucky, on the banks of the Ohio River, in August 1829, to ask new questions about forced migration and environment in and through the southern mountains. The few extant sources that tell the story of this moment of resistance suggest that the people involved wielded knowledge about the natural world—in addition to physical violence—to struggle toward freedom in new and unfamiliar landscapes. false

The Center for Peace Communications (CPC) helped Gazans overcome it through Whispered in Gaza, a unique digital series of first-hand testimony about life under Hamas rule. CPC President Joseph Braude will share video and findings from his ongoing, daily contact with Gazans about public attitudes toward the war, Israel, and Gaza’s future. CPC founder Joseph Braude is an expert on the nexus of culture and politics in Arab societies and an active presence in the region’s media and policy debates. He studied Near Eastern languages at Yale and Arabic and Islamic history at Princeton. He is the author of five books, including Reclamation: A Cultural Policy for Arab-Israeli Partnership (The Washington Institute, 2019). false

Join us for an evening with Daniel Ziblatt, Eaton Professor of the Science of Government at Harvard University and co-author with Steven Levitsky of the global bestseller How Democracies Die (described by The Economist in 2021 as arguably the most important book of the Trump era and translated into over 20 languages). His new book, together with his co-author Steven Levitsky, is Tyranny of the Minority, already a huge bestseller around the world. The German release is this week and promises to be another Spiegel Bestseller for the authors. They draw on a wealth of examples—from 1930s France to present-day Thailand—to explain why and how political parties turn against democracy. They then show how the United States Constitution makes it uniquely vulnerable to attacks from within. Most modern democracies—from Germany and Sweden to Argentina and New Zealand—have eliminated outdated institutions like elite upper chambers, indirect elections, and lifetime tenure for judges. The United States lags dangerously behind. Together with Levitsky, Ziblatt issues an urgent call to perfect our national experiment. Additional information about building a Birthday-in-a-Box: Birthday Wishes’ mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. Birthday Wishes believes that all children, regardless of their living situation, should celebrate their birthdays joyfully, surrounded by family, friends, and others who care. You can help make this happen for those children! Each Birthday-in-a-Box will be delivered to a homeless child and their family unit (up to 6-8 people) while they are staying at a homeless shelter. When building Birthdays-in-a-Box, please make sure of the following: 1. Correct boxes are used (15” x 12” x 10 banker box or copy paper box with detached lid) 2. Boxes are neatly wrapped (please see our website to watch our instructional wrapping video click here). Younger children will need assistance from adults. 3. Please make sure all the party supplies in each individual box are of the same theme and coordinate. 4. All party supplies must be in unopened original packaging. Please no loose items. 5. Birthday-in-a-Box themes should be appropriate for children ages 2-13. We are currently in need of the following themes: Disney Princess, Unicorn, Minnie Mouse, Rainbow, Space, Star Wars, Video Gaming, Lego, Marvel, DCU, Construction, Monster Trucks, Paw Patrol and Generic Birthday Themes for kids of all ages. 6. Only add items listed on our Checklist. 7. Make sure that the cake mix and frosting’s expiration dates are at least 8 months beyond the date of your drop-off. 8. Birthday Wishes will add three carefully chosen gifts to each Birthday-in-a-Box before we deliver it to the child. 9.
